Allergy Testing

Skin Prick Test
Allergy testing is usually done by skin prick test. This is a sensitive and accurate method to diagnose the cause of your allergies. Tiny amounts of a variety of common allergens are placed on the skin with a tiny prick/scratch. The tests are placed either on the back or on the arms. There is minimal discomfort with this test. A test is positive when a small hive occurs, which may include itching and redness at the site of the prick. You will know the results within 20 minutes.

Intradermal Test
If the prick test is negative and we suspect that you are allergic to the allergen, we may choose to further test with intradermals. A small amount of a more concentrated allergen is placed under the skin with a small needle on the upper arm. A positive test includes a small hive and itching or redness.

After skin testing - For both the prick test and intradermal testing, the positive reactions are gone within about an hour.  You may return to normal activity when you are finished.

IMPORTANT: Allergy testing and education require 1-2 hours of your time. We recommend that you limit the number of people at the visit. We would appreciate your complete attention during testing and teaching. Please review the section about medications to stop prior to skin testing. Please do not stop any asthma, heart or blood pressure medications. If you are uncomfortable about stopping any of your medications prior to your appointment, call us.

RAST
This is a blood test for allergy. This test may be done if the skin is extremely sensitive where a skin test would not be as reliable. This test may also be done if you are having allergy symptoms and are unable to stop your antihistamine. You do not need to stop any medications for this testing. As a rule RAST testing is not as accurate as skin testing for environmental allergens (pollen, dust, mold, mites, etc.).

Patch Testing
Rashes that occur on the skin have many different causes. Sometimes a contact allergy occurs because of what we rub or wear on the skin. Patch testing can help us determine whether you are allergic to something that touches your skin, such as metal, a certain lotion, medication or cosmetics. Patch testing involves taping a soft paper panel of suspected allergens usually on the upper back. This area needs to be kept dry. Two days after the patches are placed, you return to the office for patch removal and examination of the upper back. If a test is positive, there will be a small area of eczema. With this information, we can help you avoid the triggers of your eczema. Patch testing is essentially pain free.

Medications That Interfere With Allergy Testing
When you are scheduled for allergy testing on the skin, please avoid the following antihistamine medications for 5-7 days. (unless your health problems would be intolerable without them)

Pulmonary or lung function testing is done in our office. This test will help us assess and treat any respiratory or breathing problems. These symptoms may include a history of coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath. This test will also help us diagnose and monitor patients with asthma. This test is painless as you simply blow into a mouthpiece connected to a computer which will then provide a printout of your results.

Patient Education

We provide education at your office visit as well as provide information either on paper or on a computer disk.  We encourage you to read further about your specific condition.  There is much to learn!

Information about Allergies
If you have red, itchy eyes and a runny nose especially in the spring or fall, you may be experiencing allergies. Allergy symptoms occur when a person is sensitive to an otherwise harmless substance. Allergic people may develop a variety of symptoms when they come in contact with an allergen. Allergic diseases involve the immune system and may include: allergic rhinitis (hayfever), asthma, food allergy, insect allergy, drug allergy, contact dermatitis, eczema, hives or frequent infections.

Allergens
An allergen is a substance that causes allergy symptoms. These symptoms may include runny nose, itchy eyes (hay fever), asthma, eczema, hives, swelling, intestinal symptoms or allergic shock. These reactions occur because of a release of histamine and other chemicals from the immune system. Allergens can be introduced into the body through the nose (inhalants), swallowed (ingestants), or injected such as drugs, vaccines, or insect stings. Allergies can occur at any time and at any age. A combination of exposure to allergens along with a family history of allergy increases the potential for you to become allergic.

Common allergens include; house dust, dust mites, molds, cockroach, pet dander and pollens which include: grass, tree and weed pollens
